I’m pleased to have guest Nicole Zoltack, author of Black Hellebore, here to teach us how to create the perfect superhero.
Creating a Superhero
“Superheroes are amazing heroes who have the ability to save the world (if they so choose, but if they don’t, they’re a super villain, but that’s another story). But how does an author go about creating a superhero?
“First is their origin. Were they born a superhero? Are they an alien from another planet? Did an accident create them? Magic? Radiation? There are so many different ways an ordinary man could be transformed into a superhero.
“Next is their back story, their history. Not every person that is given amazing abilities will become a hero. (Again with the fine line between hero and villain). Just look at fire fighters. They run into blazing buildings to help people when most everyone else is running away. Those are the kind of people that would rise to the occasion and already are heroes.
“Third is their abilities themselves. Most have super strength, but there’s also the ability to fly or heal or time travel or super speed… The list goes on and on. It’s fun to pick and choose what a superhero can and can’t do.
“Finally, all heroes have to have a weakness. They can’t be truly invincible or there’s no suspense when they come up against the super villain.
“In Black Hellebore, Nicholas Adams dies and is brought to life through magic. A black hellebore – a flower with magical, dangerous properties – was in his pocket and transformed him into a superhero. He’s been on the run from his past for years now and when given the chance to grow roots and actually become somebody, he seizes the chance. He’s super strong and has heightened senses, but if he uses his powers, there are all kind of nasty side effects.
“If you could create a superhero, what would be their origin? Their history? Their abilities and their weaknesses?”
Nicole Zoltack loves to write fantasy/paranormal, romances, horror, historical, for adults and young adults, novels, short stories, and flash pieces. She doesn’t want to get boxed in by genre — she might be claustrophobic! She’s also an editor for MuseItUp Publishing and works as a freelance editor.
When she isn’t writing about girls wanting to be knights, talking unicorns, and zombies, she spends time with her loving family. She loves to ride horses (pretending they’re unicorns, of course!) and going to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, dressed in period garb. Her favorite current TV show is The Walking Dead.
Black Hellebore, first in a new superhero romance trilogy – Heroes of Falledge is now available in e-book format.
Once a year for the past decade, Nicholas Adams returns to Falledge and leaves a black hellebore on his girlfriend’s grave. While fleeing Falledge, he spies a shady man sneaking into the laboratory. Nicholas chases after him and dies for his trouble. A witch brings him back to life, only Nicholas is not the same man. Turns out, magic combined with a black hellebore in his pocket changed him into a kind of a super man.
Julianna Paige, his girlfriend’s twin and deputy of Falledge, struggles to solve several murders. Nicholas, and his alter ego the Black Hellebore, helps her, even as she helps him move on and start to truly live again.
Unfortunately, Nicholas wasn’t the only one changed in the laboratory explosion, and now a super villain is bent on destroying Falledge, and killing the Black Hellebore. But falling in love might prove more dangerous than any super villain.
