2013 was the Year of the Writer. Last year at this time, I made a commitment to my writing. And you know what they say — when you make a commitment like that, the universe answers.
Indeed, it did!
First, I tried my hand at freelance nonfiction writing. I wrote over 100 articles for FamilyShare.com, ModernMom.com, and more. Some of my articles went viral and had over 50,000 page views; others were hidden deep on the internet and might have been viewed by one or two visitors. In any case, it was fun to share my life experiences and have my voice heard.
I continued to participate in #FridayFlash in 2013. As always, it was a fun, creative exercise that helped me flex my writing muscles. Not every story was a home run, but each helped me to improve, and I did write a few stories I feel quite proud of. I plan on doing more of the same in 2014.
In addition to flash fiction, I completed three short stories as part of my Freeborn series.
I continued my search for greater knowledge. I completed a Steve Alcorn’s Novel Writing Workshop, based on his novel, How to Fix Your Novel. I learned so much from that class. I think it definitely helped me improve, and it has prepared me for my biggest goal for the upcoming new year.
So, without further ado, I hereby declare 2014 to be The Year of the Novel!
My goal this year is to complete my second novel. From planning to world-building to character development to plot and story, and everything in between, I will be stretching myself beyond anything I’ve done before.
I have additional projects planned, as well. Beginning today, I am participating in the Ultimate Blog Challenge. I will continue to review books, because I love getting good stuff for free. 🙂 Finally, I will be expanding my Writer’s Corner posts with a series focused on getting your butt in the chair to help myself and others become more disciplined writers.
Do you have any goals or resolutions for the New Year? What do you hope to accomplish?
