John Bytheway is a popular inspirational speaker for young adults. In his book, Lifestyles of the Great and Spacious, he drops the sometimes goofy humor and approaches this topic with a more serious yet still engaging tone.
Bytheway deconstructs Lehi’s dream as found in the Book of Mormon. Verse by verse, he offers his personal thoughts, insights and observations. The format is easy to read, and the commentary is informational if not particularly profound.
I enjoyed the parallel Bytheway draws between Lehi’s dream of the Tree of Life and the parable of the sower and the seeds in the New Testament. He points out that in Lehi’s dream, there are four paths, just like there are four kinds of soil in the parable of the sower. He then suggests that it is an opportunity to ask ourselves, “Where am I in these parables?” and “Is this where I want to be?”
Lifestyles of the Great and Spacious is a great read for those who are looking for a better understanding of Lehi’s dream and how to apply its teachings to their lives.
