Summer has always been my favorite time of year. Growing up in Southern California, I spent a lot of time at the beach. When I wasn’t body surfing in the waves, I was lying out, working on my tan, always with my nose in a book.
The best beach reads take you away from every day life. They sweep you along on wild adventures to exotic places. They thrill us with danger and romance. Essentially, they take us on vacation even when we don’t get to go on vacation.
Each Wednesday this summer, I’ll post a review recommending a new beach read. As a NetGalley Professional Reader, I am able to discover, read, and share reviews about new books before they are published. I’ll share the best of these here on my blog, in addition to other excellent books that I come across.
To kick off the summer, here are some of my favorite beach reads (with affiliate links):
Pretty Little Dead Girls by Mercedes M. Yardley. Brilliantly written, Pretty Little Dead Girls is a dark, lovely fairy tale with lyrical language and a high body count. Speculative/Thriller
The Nothing Girl by Jodi Taylor. Jodi Taylor brings all her comic writing skills to this heart-warming tale of self-discovery. Contemporary.
The Law of Moses by Amy Harmon. Each of Amy Harmon’s books is haunting, beautiful, and unique. The Law of Moses is possibly her best. It is a must-read before the June 15th release of The Song of David (see my review June 10th). Romance.
Remake by Ilima Todd. When Nine discovers the truth about life outside of Freedom Province, including the secret plan of the Prime Maker, she is pulled between two worlds and two lives. YA dystopian.
The Rent Collector by Camron Wright. The Rent Collector invites you into a small, make-shift home of a family struggling to survive, and escape, the slums of Cambodia. Literary.
